Was the healthcare legislation a Lose/Lose situation for Barack Obama?

If Obama decided to use his filibuster-proof majority in Congress to p meaningful healthcare reform, the Republican would have yelled that he not willing to compromise, partisan, and egotistical. If Obama decides to compromise with Republicans on the healthcare legislation (which he has), then Republicans say that he "Failed" to p the reform that he wanted, so he "lost." How can he win? Obama could cure AIDS and Republicans would claim that he was a witch. it's sad.
