IP Flood Detection on Motorola Modem causing huge packet loss?

The IP Flood Detection setting on my motorola modem is causing 58+% packet loss. How necessary is it to keep this on? Is there a way to tweak it to give me some protection yet keep my packet loss at a minimum?
